I've felt for some time that the MLS is outmoded, monopolistic, and pointless. It is a classic legacy monopoly like Microsoft, except it does not even have the efficiencies of a typical monopoly. The success of craigslist ads, despite crummy interface, testifies to people's desire for a new way.
My own hat is in the ring with www.housetribe.com. We think that combining fun real estate with sales real estate could be a path to growth, entirely outside the MLS.

I'm soooo tired of convincing delusional sellers into realistic selling prices. The denial, the justifications, the my house is special and should be worth more conversation is pointless, exhausting and a waste of everyone's time.
I say we automate the process. You want to use the MLS to sell your house? Fine, we list for whatever crazy price you want. And every day it doesn't sell we knock $1000 off the asking price, automatically.
What? You think this is nuts? Then you're not a real seller, you're a poseur. more...

Information could be standardized, sharing information would be easier. A national MLS could be the “place for all real estate info.” NAR is overly concerned about protecting information and its members. In many areas, you can’t advertise home sales statistics taken from the MLS. more...
